Alcoholism – You Can Beat It!

St. Patrick’s day was yesterday and most of us are aware of the fact that March 17th is tied to the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. It sounds like a fun, harmless holiday but for too many in the United States, St. Patrick’s Day has ended in tragedy due to drunk drivers getting behind the wheel.

So what’s the deal with alcohol and what is alcohol dependence?  Alcohol affects the mind, it is best understood as a drug that reduces a person’s ability to think rationally and distorts his or her judgment. Alcohol dependence is a diagnosis in which an individual is physically or psychologically dependent upon drinking alcohol. If you are unsure if you are alcoholic there are many self tests online that can be used as a guide to understanding your alcohol use and the potential health issues involved with it.
