Everett WA, a moderately sized city of 127,000 suffering from the unequal degradation of the consequences of opioid addiction, has uniquely partnered with Ideal Option, a well-developed Addiction Medicine Program. Everett began the COET (Community Outreach and Enforcement Teams), consisting of a police officer and an embedded Masters level social worker. Their role is to identify and assess the at risk population of Everett, particularly addicted homeless citizens. By making immediate contact between these individuals and Ideal Option, the patient is transported directly from the street to the clinic. The patient is then given access to an array of resources in just a few hours. This circumvents the many longstanding barriers to successful treatment such as; being given appointments far into future, long waits for insurance authorization, adding additional burdens to patients struggling with a vast array of medical, social, and psychological ills. By creating immediate opportunities for treatment, the patient is supported, protected, and able to settle gradually into a healthy, stable schedule. This enables the individual to better participate in their own recovery.
