In an interview conducted by Cover2Resources, Dr. Darin Neven discusses how Emergency Departments can equip themselves with effective tools for treating patients whom present with Substance Use Disorder symptoms. The historical course of treatment at varying ED facilities has largely been a “treat em and street em” approach, stabilizing patients and then sending them on their way.
However, Dr. Neven discusses the need to stray away from this type of treatment by migrating towards a more impactful solution that engages patients in treatment from the first point of contact. Specifically, Dr. Neven presents the success he has found by administering Suboxone® in the ED then referring those patients out to outpatient programs for ongoing maintenance.
Ideal Option has worked closely with Dr. Neven to create a same/next day referral system so that patients are taken care of in an effective and efficient manner. Ideal Option is uniquely positioned to collaborate with Emergency Departments to ensure patients are appropriately cared for. The two physicians whom lead Ideal Option, Dr. Jeffrey Allgaier and Dr. Kenneth Egli, are double board certified in both Emergency and Addiction Medicine. As such, Dr. Allgaier and Dr. Egli are able to leverage their background in Emergency Medicine to inspire thoughtful and meaningful dialogue with Emergency Department administrators regarding treating Substance Use Disorder. These two physicians have worked closely with Emergency Departments across the Country to provide Substance Use Disorder education/consults, as well as, create streamlined referral systems.
There is no moment more precious than the moment a prospective Substance Use Disorder patient presents their symptoms to a healthcare provider. In the wake of the widening Opioid Epidemic, it is imperative that all community stakeholders collaborate to inspire impactful healthcare solutions.
